Freezers Buyers Guide

At Atlantic Electrics, we are here to help you. We offer a wide selection of exceptional appliances that will provide you with the best performance and outstanding results. So, we can help you choose the right freezer for your home and your budget.

A few things to consider

The most important features to consider when buying a freezer are fit types, capacity, functions and energy ratings. We will explore these features in detail in this guide to help you find the right model for your home.

  • Freestanding Freezer

Freestanding appliances are the most flexible option as they come in a variety of sizes and styles that will suit any kitchen layout. Freestanding models are packed with handy features to provide you with the best performance.

  • Integrated Freezer

Integrated freezers are neatly hidden behind a cabinet door and are ideal for space-saving options. An integrated appliance is a great choice if you prefer the modern, sleek look as you can use your door panel to match your kitchen design. You can choose between an upright model or an under-counter model so you can find the right fit for your space.

Freezer Style

There are a variety of freezer types to choose from, so you can find the model that suits your style and kitchen layout the best.

Tall Upright Models

A very popular choice, upright models are a more flexible option for your kitchen. These tall models are great for medium-sized households as they offer plenty of space so you can store all your frozen essentials. You can choose between a freestanding or integrated fit type with an upright model.

Under-Counter Models

Perfect for smaller households, an under-counter model will sit neatly below your kitchen counter. You can choose between a freestanding or integrated fit type with an under-counter model. For more information, please refer to our Under-counter Fridges and Freezers buyers guide.

Chest freezers

A chest freezer is ideal for larger households or for those who like to stock up on frozen goods. These models feature a lid which opens from the top and offers plenty of storage space. You can find these models in a range of different sizes to suit any requirements. For more information, please refer to our chest freezers buyers guide.

Compact freezers

Compact freezers are the perfect solution for small households and spaces. You can easily fit these models anywhere in your home, including on top of your counter to save space on your floor. All you need is an electricity socket nearby and you’re good to go.

Choosing the right capacity

The size of your household will determine the right litre capacity you require for your home. Freezer capacities can vary between 80-400+ litres, depending on the model type. We stock a range of freezers so you can easily find the right sized appliance to suit your lifestyle and storage needs.

Key features to consider

As technology has developed over time, freezers have benefited from a range of additional features to improve performance and make life easier for you. We have created a list of key features to consider to help you make the right purchase.

Frost-free technology

The convenient Frost-free technology eliminates the need to manually defrost your freezer. The interior fan will consistently circulate the movement of air to prevent any moisture from sticking to your food and forming ice. This ensures that you can safely store your essentials for longer without any ice build-up.

Fast Freeze

Some models feature a Fast Freeze function which enables you to rapidly freeze your food by lowering the freezer temperature to maintain nutrients and flavours. This feature is great for when you get home from shopping and want to quickly freeze your freshly stored goods.

Winter guard technology

Generally, most manufacturers don’t recommend placing a freezer in a garage or outbuilding as they do not meet the right temperature for the appliance to run smoothly. However, you may be able to choose a model that offers Winter-guard technology which will keep your freezer at the right temperature required during colder conditions.

We advise that you check if your chosen model can be placed in a different room before you make your purchase.

Door alarm

Generally, most models feature a door alarm which will audibly alert you when the appliance door has been left open. This useful feature will ensure you can protect your stored goods.

Power cut failsafe

Some models feature a handy failsafe feature which will safely protect your stored goods if there is ever a power cut.

Budget buy vs Top of the range

The difference between a budget buy and a top of the range purchase can be:

  • Frost Free
  • Fast Freeze
  • Reversible doors
  • Smart technology
  • Internal lighting

Choosing an eco-friendly appliance

Staying eco-conscious has never been easier. If choosing an eco-friendly freezer is important to you, there are a number of factors to consider. You can find out how energy efficient a particular model is by checking the model’s energy rating. All labels are graded from A – G to help you understand how efficient an appliance is. Generally, appliances with an A grading are the most energy efficient as they are equipped with several intelligent, energy-saving features. Energy efficient models guarantee to provide exceptional performance whilst taking the environment into consideration.

  • Freezer brands

There is a wide variety of trusted brands to choose from when selecting a freezer. You can pick your favourite or find the brand that offers the specific features, capacity, functionality and colour you are looking for. Take some time to research and discover the brand that is right for you.

  • Picking your colour

Whether you have chosen a freestanding or integrated model, you will want to make sure your new freezer suits your style. Freezers come in a variety of colours and designs so you can choose the appliance that matches and completes your home.

  • Number of drawers

Generally, the number of drawers in a freezer can vary depending on the size of the model. Undercounter models typically offer 3 drawers whilst upright models can supply up to 8 drawers. You can also find some freezer models that supply shelves.

  • Door hinges

Another key factor to consider is which way you need the appliance door to open that is most convenient for you. It is important that you find a model that can suit your kitchen layout and allow you easy access to your stored essentials. Some models offer removable hinges so you can position the door for a left or right opening. This provides you with the freedom to place your freezer wherever you need in your kitchen space.

Home checks

We have listed below a few key home checks you should complete before you choose your new freezer.

  • If you have chosen a freestanding model, we advise that you leave a few centimetres of space either side of the appliance so you can open the freezer door with ease.
  • If you have chosen an integrated model, we recommend that you measure the available space inside your kitchen units. When measuring the depth of your cupboard space, we advise that you leave a few centimetres of space at the back of the appliance for sockets that are required for connection.

Maintenance

It is important to take care of your appliance to ensure you protect your freezer’s performance. Freezers are now designed with efficiency and longevity in mind, requiring only a few simple steps to keep them in their best condition.

Defrosting your freezer

If your freezer does not offer frost free technology, you will need to manually defrost your freezer to prevent the build-up of ice. Defrosting your freezer is not a difficult task and can be done in just a few quick steps. We advise that you check your manufacturer’s guide to see how often you should defrost your freezer in order to protect the appliance’s performance.

  1. First, you must turn off the appliance at the well.
  2. Then, remove any food from the appliance and keep the door open. Place a towel down to prevent any spills on your kitchen floor.
  3. Next, place a bowl of hot water on the bottom shelf of the freezer and leave this for a few hours.
  4. Once all the ice has melted, you can simply wipe the interior of the appliance down with a sponge.

We recommend that you check your manufacturer’s guide and product details to ensure you understand what maintenance care your freezer needs, and what you can do to help keep your appliance running smoothly.

FAQs

We have listed some common questions we often get asked when buying a freezer below.

How do I know when it is time for a new freezer?

Typically, if you think you may need a freezer, the key things to look for are:

  • If your food is defrosting in your freezer, and maybe going bad.
  • If the temperature in your freezer isn’t correct.

What is the difference between Low Frost and Frost Free technology?

Low Frost technology reduces the amount of ice that builds up in your freezer, however you will need to occasionally defrost your appliance yourself. Frost free technology prevents ice from forming meaning you will never need to manually defrost your freezer.

Do freezers offer flexible storage?

Some freezers may offer flexible storage which enables you to rearrange the drawers inside the appliance to make space for larger items.

How much space do I need to leave around a freezer?

Some manufacturers recommend that you leave approximately 2-5cm of space around your appliance to ensure you have room for any plugs and pipes, and to enable your freezer to run efficiently.

Which hinge type do I need for my integrated freezer?

For integrated models, there are two types of hinges you need to choose from. These are sliding and fixed. A fixed hinge connects the cabinet door directly to the appliance door which will fully support the weight of the appliance and cabinet. A sliding hinge is attached to the cabinet door to slide in and out as the door is opened and closed.
